Overview
Te Reo Matatini Structured learning constitutes a specific pedagogical methodology grounded in the Science of Reading. This approach integrates the various domains of Te Reo Māori language relevant to literacy acquisition, encompassing both pānui (reading) – specifically word recognition and comprehension – and tuhituhi (writing) – including handwriting, spelling, and composition.
About the course
By drawing on the Science of Reading, kaiako gain a deeper understanding of the cognitive processes underlying successful reading acquisition in ākonga. This knowledge enables kaiako to implement a robust, evidence-based approach that fosters effective learning within the classroom.
Te Reo Matatini Structured learning ensures explicit and direct instruction in all key literacy components:
- Phonology – Mātai weteoro,
- Sound-Symbol Association – Oro-tohu kōmitimiti,
- Syllables – Kūoro,
- Morphology – Mātai Wete kupu,
- Syntax – Tātai kupu,
- Semantic cue – Tīwhiri tikanga
This learning is explicit and cumulative and prepares ākonga for focused literacy success. This approach aligns with cognitive load theory. By breaking down literacy skills into smaller, sequential steps, we create a clear pathway for building knowledge and expertise.
Te Reo Matatini Structured learning lays a strong foundation for focused literacy development and prepares ākonga for focused literacy success.
