Last year I concluded my term as National President of the New Zealand Principals’ Federation and moved to Auckland to work for Tui Tuia | Learning Circle supporting principal professional learning.
Having landed in Tamaki Makaurau mid-January, I quickly secured an apartment in the Wynyard Quarter.
I have a harbourside view off the balcony. I suspect Netflix will suffer for the time spent enjoying the view. Auckland is spectacular.
Until the apartment becomes available, I am living with my brother and his partner in a beautiful Grey Lynn villa. I’ve set myself a goal of never eating at the same café twice. A long itinerary of cafés awaits.
I have spent the past few weeks orienting myself at Tui Tuia | Learning Circle and meeting the wonderful team. My sincere thanks to them for making me feel welcome.
Tui Tuia | Learning Circle is the University of Auckland’s professional development service for educators throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
I am excited about my shift in professional focus. Enabling principals to be better supported in their leadership through professional learning certainly has me bouncing out of bed in the morning!
At this time of the year, principals are working with their staff to plan, provision, and launch the year. There is always a sense of excitement and promise about the adventures that lie ahead.
Once again schooling starts with the added complexity of COVID planning. With the Omicron variant spreading in our communities, living with COVID appears to now be our reality.
In the third year of this pandemic, we will be balancing the important job to deploy procedure to guard against the transmission of COVID with an effort to make the mental shift away from the all-consuming psychological impact of constant ‘crisis management’.
It is vital that we help our young people find joy in their schooling and that principals and teaching staff have space to address pressing issues such as student attendance, learning and achievement.
As school returns, early assessments will be necessary to gauge the impact of the past year on students and careful planning will be necessary to ensure needs are met.
In the weeks and months ahead, I look forward to sharing commentary through the Tui Tuia | Learning Circle channels on these and other leadership issues germane to principalship.
The Tui Tuia | Learning Circle team, backed by the research and rigour of the University of Auckland recognise the unique capabilities required of a school principal. The team is committed to meaningful professional learning and support for principals.
The sky is the limit. The Tui Tuia | Learning Circle team aren’t constrained by preconceived ideas about what principals require to be effective leaders, so get excited! The team is energised by the possibilities and motivated to deliver to you.
In order to be certain that you are connected to Tui Tuia | Learning Circle, please ‘like’ or ‘follow’ us on Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter so that you can receive ‘push’ notifications.
