The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) is a standardised assessment for non-native speakers of the Korean language. It is administered six times a year in Korea: January, April, May, July, October, and November). In New Zealand, TOPIK is offered twice annually – in April and October.
This year, the 96th TOPIK will be held on Saturday, 12 October in Christchurch. Please note that applications for this test are now closed. For information about the next TOPIK in 2025, please contact the Korean Education Centre in New Zealand.
The Korean for Beginners session, part of Immersion Day's common sessions on Saturday, 6 July, was a success.
This session, aimed at teachers of languages other than Korean, provided a chance to dive into a Korean-speaking environment and build beginner-level language skills in a friendly setting. Teachers had the opportunity to put themselves in their learners' shoes and experience learning a new language firsthand.
With 12 teachers taking part, the session included interactive activities focused on basic Korean phrases and numbers. This hands-on approach made learning effective and helped create a sense of community among the participants. Teachers used simple Korean phrases to connect with each other, making the learning experience both engaging and supportive.
Participants also gained valuable insights into Task-based Language Teaching, gaining practical ideas for teaching beginner-level students.
We hope to see more Korean teachers joining our next Immersion Day, scheduled to take place in Ōtautahi Christchurch in two years' time!
It was delightful to catch up with familiar faces and meet new Korean language teachers at our Immersion Day on 6 July and at the NZALT 50th Anniversary Biennial Conference in Auckland from 6-9 July 2024.
