What we will cover

This PLD is focused on understanding the Learning Languages area of the New Zealand Curriculum. It aims to give you an understanding of how languages progress as well as the ways you can support students even if you do not speak the language yourself. Understanding students from different cultural backgrounds and valuing what they bring to the classroom will support their learning and help them to experience success as their unique selves.

Specifics of the New Zealand Curriculum will be discussed in depth and you will be able to apply your understanding to practical situations in the classroom. You will learn how to support bilingual and multilingual students and learn to produce resources that will support language learning.

This course builds your capability in the following Teacher Aide Competency areas:

  • Teacher Aide Induction and Foundation: overarching Teacher Aide values & good practice.
  • Cultural Competence: Understand the importance of culture and identity in learning and inclusiveness of all cultural and linguistic diversity.
  • Languages: Communicate with learners, parents, and colleagues in te reo Māori, NZSL, or another language;  Support learners with English as an Additional Language; Assist in production of language resources and adaptation of curriculum.
