Overview

说文解字 Shuowen Jiezi is the first Chinese dictionary to analyse the forms and origins of Chinese characters, making it a fundamental resource for understanding their etymology and structure. Gaining familiarity with the textual patterns in the 说文解字 Shuowen Jiezi can provide deeper insights into Chinese characters, enhance instruction in Chinese character education, and support the promotion of Chinese language teaching.

Where: Chinese classroom at Burnside High School - 139 Greers Road, Burnside, Christchurch 8053

Registrations open on 24 October and close on 7 November 2024.

What we will cover

In this workshop, participants will deepen their understanding of the main characteristics of the Shuowen Jiezi and its role in Chinese character education and research. They will also explore how to adjust teaching methods based on the Shuowen Jiezi to enhance the effectiveness of character teaching.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the theory and characteristics of the Shuowen Jiezi
  • Connect the Shuowen Jiezi with Chinese character teaching
  • Design more effective quizzes for their students.
