Overview

This unique programme offers participants the opportunity to enhance their linguistic knowledge of French, become familiar with the famous Québécois accent, and gain first-hand experience in applying project-based approaches to enrich their students' learning in Aotearoa. Participants will also be able to deepen their understanding of French and Canadian culture, and gain inspired ideas for new resources and activities to elevate their teaching practice.

When:

Flights depart Auckland on Sunday 29th June 2025 and return on Tuesday 15th July 2025

Teachers will miss two days of lessons, a cost to be covered by their school.

Université de Montréal, QC, Canada

Application:

Registrations open on 03 February 2025 and close on 21 February 2025. No registrations will be accepted after this date.

Principals and/or in-school PLD approvers will be contacted to endorse a teacher’s application.

Eligibility:

Applicants must be New Zealand registered teachers who are currently teaching French at a New Zealand school and are intending to continue to teach French in NZ in 2026 and beyond.

Pre-Service Teachers and holders of a LAT are not eligible.

Places on the trip are very limited and priority will go to those who:

  • Are teaching French at Years 7-10 in 2025
  • Have a proven track record in engagement with PLD offered by Tui Tuia | Learning Circle
  • Have NOT participated in an immersion trip before
  • Are not a native of Quebec province

What we will cover

This fully immersive experience, specifically designed to boost participants' language skills and deepen their understanding of French-Canadian culture and history, includes:

  • Daily language lessons (project-based) and conversation classes at Université de Montréal
  • Excursions around Montréal, including guided visits to the Old Town, the Collège de Montréal and botanic gardens
  • An overnight trip to Québec City
  • Attendance at various cultural festivals (musical, theatrical and a powwow)

The final programme is TBC and subject to changes based on availability and weather.

Participants will need to complete three online surveys for Tui Tuia | Learning Circle and attend a compulsory two-hour online orientation meeting prior to departure. Additionally, participants will be expected to engage in project-based resource creation, with instructions provided at a later date.

What’s included?

  • Language and conversation classes(up to 5hrs per day)
  • Cost of all group activities and excursions, including weekend trip to Québec City
  • Flights to Montréal (ex-AKL),plus domestic transfers for those living outside of Auckland
  • Accommodation while in Canada (This will be a mixture of homestay with families and shared accommodation with the group)
  • Travel insurance
  • One group dinner

What’s not included?

  • Cost of getting to and from airports in NZ (including any parking at airports)
  • Visas and/or Electronic Trave lAuthorization (eTA) to enter Canada
  • All meals (except one group dinner)
  • Personal spending
  • Cost of Teacher Release Days*(TRDs)

* Schools will need to cover TRDs for Monday 14th and Tuesday 15thJuly. This will be communicated to principals during the application process.

Tui Tuia | Learning Circle Languages is funded to provide professional learning for provisionally and fully registered Primary, Intermediate and Secondary teachers throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
