Join us for an immersive and hands-on workshop celebrating the Chinese Moon Festival and exploring its cultural connections with the Māori Matariki Festival. We will delve into the rich traditions of both festivals through engaging activities, including making delicious mooncakes, creating traditional Chinese lanterns that blend Chinese and Māori art elements, and crafting Matariki stars using traditional Māori weaving techniques.

What we will cover

In this workshop, we will explore and celebrate the cultural significance of both the Chinese Moon Festival and the Māori Matariki Festival through a series of interactive and creative activities, while also gaining practical ideas for incorporating these traditions into your classroom.

The workshop will be delivered in both English and Chinese.

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the cultural traditions and symbols of both the Chinese Moon Festival and the Māori Matariki Festival
  • Make delicious mooncakes using simple, non-traditional ingredients, which are easy to incorporate into classroom activities
  • Design traditional Chinese lanterns that blend Chinese calligraphy and painting with Māori art elements, enhancing their ability to teach cultural integration
  • Develop practical skills in weaving Matariki stars using traditional Māori techniques, enabling them to guide their students in similar activities.
